Stuart's Opera House: Bringing (Even More) Arts Education to the MOV (And How Your Can Help)
If you're a music lover in the Mid-Ohio Valley, chances are you've enjoyed an event, program or performance that has been supported by Stuart's Opera House.
Based in Nelsonville, Ohio, the once Vaudeville and Melodrama house from the late 1800s has long since showcased many talented local, national and international acts. And for nearly the past 20 years, they (Stuart's) have devoted much of what they do to their hearty Arts Education Program (AEP).
Over 2,200 work hours are invested yearly into the AEP (a program that introduces children and adults to a variety of creative arts opportunities), with an average of 7,000 Southeastern Ohio students participating in the Stuart's Arts Programs, each year. The Arts Education Program includes:
-Free theater attendance for primary students in Athens, Hocking, Meigs and Perry County Schools,
-An after school music program for up to 20 high school aged children (teaching musicianship and well as team building skills for students interested in forming their own bands),
-A performing arts camp for Circle Round the Square summer education program,
-A visiting artist in residence program for Athens County Schools,
-A creative writing program for adults
-And free admission to all children under 12 to the Nelsonville Music Festival
With the momentum continuing to build for the arts education offerings at Stuart's Opera House, it seemed like the best option to expand their space, including more opportunities for young students and adults. Introducing: The Next Stage.
The Next Stage, Stuart's Capital Campaign, will create "The Stuart's Opera House Education and Community Center" at 30 Public Square.
What does The Next Stage entail? According to the SOH Education Director Emily Prince, this will include "a new lobby that is 3 times the size of our current lobby, as well as new offices and a catering kitchen. This renovation will provide much needed space for our expanded Arts Education Program, serving young people, adults and seniors."
The space will also include:
"-Designated spaces for set construction,
-Costume storage and enhanced backstage accommodation (such as dressing rooms, showers and green rooms) for performers...
-A new lobby and reception are will accommodate our sold out audiences,
-There will be seating for up to 250 people. "
Several events are held throughout the year (including Nelsonville Music Festival) to raise funds for the Stuart's Opera House's Arts Education Program (which provides all of its above listed services at no cost to the participants), and one of the really cool fundraisers is happening on Thursday (tomorrow!): The 2016 Fundraiser Raffle! The prizes are really impressive, and include:
